About CP & CPAA
What is Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. These conditions are typically caused by damage to one or more areas of the brain, usually during fetal development, birth or infancy. With this condition, interference with messages from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain results in problems with motor control. The damaged brain is unable to regulate the muscle tone, strength and fluidity of movement needed to perform motor tasks. Individuals living with cerebral palsy may experience muscle tightness or spasms, involuntary movement, disturbance in gait or mobility, difficulty swallowing and problems with speech.
While cerebral palsy is neither a disease nor a progressive illness, it is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured. However, with training, therapy and support, individuals living with cerebral palsy can manage their conditions and lead active lives.
It is estimated that three out of every 1,000 Albertans are living with CP.
